Just finished the LONG process of the turkey day shopping list... and i have help this year doing it, so i am looking forward to even the shopping part of tday.
i got my shiny new xmas tree today... loving the 'flocked' look... can't wait till the second everyone has finished their pumpkin pie to whip this baby into place ! I think my bff is more excited to see all my xmas goodies packed away in all the trunks and boxes in the basement than even i am... it's like a Christmas store down there i swear.
Anyone doing any unusual dishes for tday?? my new one is creamed leeks... instead of the old standby of creamed pearl onions. Looks super yummie in the pic.
Hi SC, no unusual dishes for me. The creamed leaks sound really good though. I have a recipe for onion casserole, I have only made it once but it was yummy. I hope you plan on putting up some photos once your new tree is up, I want to see your decorations!
Unusual...no, not here. I am sorta a creature of habit...especially on Thanksgiving:) I am the pie baker, I love doing the pies because I can make them ahead of time and not run around like a looney toon on the day of...I am making 2 pumpkin pies and 1 pecan:) I can't wait to see your menu, even though I am a creature of habit, I can still live vicariously through you:)
How funny... i have never made the same version of any BIG holiday meal... well side dish anyway... i keep the roast pretty much the same but diddle with the taters, veggies, and desserts like a madwoman each year. It's an even bigger hoot this year because my bff and I are doing tday together, so combining two family traditional dishes into one is alot of fun... but i'm making her make the green bean casserole from hell (hubbie's fave... not mine)
SC, I have a killer recipe I cut out of the paper years ago for make ahead mashed tatters,I had my nieces mom make them last year too. Well, she HATES potatoes!! I had no idea at the time and I would never have had her make them had I known. It was pretty funny and we still laugh about it. I am going to make a pumpkin cheese cake with nutella ganache this year. Found the recipe on line and it looks interesting.
Well since I live in the south for the first time this year I am making 2 turkeys....one roasted in the oven, and the other deep fried (outside in something called a turkey fryer). I have heard about deep fried turkeys for years, but I was never brave enough to try one. My oldest son won a turkey fryer at work, and this year we are going to try it! Notice I am still making my regular turkey with cornbread/sausage stuffing, barley casserole, green bean casserole and all the condiments. I am also making pumpkin pie, cranberry pie, and chocolate pie. I noticed that Pioneer Woman posted a cranberry pie recipe today, and it is the same recipe I have been using for years..so yummy.
Hubbie wanted to try deep frying a bird... but as accident prone as he is... i decided we would go the old fashioned way. But we are gonna "brine" the turkey first. Anyone ever do this? I've read about it for years and am finally gonna give it a try.
hopefully not on a still frozen bird... since we are buying him today. eeks.
Hi Keli! I saw that recipe on PW today too. I have been making that one for about 10 years. My dad loves it. We had a deep fried turkey couple years ago, it was pretty good. I really don't like turkey period. I usually just eat all the other stuff. SC, we brined a turkey as well. Big pan, garbage bag, you are ready to go. It was a bit messy but turned out good. Howdy to the rest of the gang!!
SC, I am going to brine the other turkey (for the first time). My daughter served a brine turkey a few years ago and my sons are still talking about it, so thought I would give it a try. So many *firsts* this year...hope it all turns out okay.
Suz, yes I agree that Cranberry Pie recipe is one of the easiest and best recipes I have ever discovered....now I wish I could remember where the heck I found it!
